How your gift is helping Typhoon Haiyan recovery, five months later

Update #5  •   Posted 3635 day(s) ago

Hi everyone,

It's been just over five months since Typhoon Haiyan ripped through the Philippines. Just a quick update on how your gifts are continuing to help the victims of this disaster. Oxfam's most recent programs have focused on assisting coconut farmers who lost their trees (which take eight years to regrow) and reestablishing fishing communities. They're taking extra care to make sure female farmers and fisherwomen are represented in their efforts too. Oxfam also set up a few sawmills so that farmers clearing away their destroyed coconut trees have a chance to process the wood and sell it as lumber while demand is high -- I think that's pretty ingenious!

Oxfam also continues to provide sanitation, cash-for-work programs, and health kits for expectant mothers.

They put together this video a couple of months ago to show some of their progess:

Once again, thanks for your generous donation and for thinking of the Philippines.

How You've Helped Long-Term Recovery in the Philippines

Update #4  •   Posted 3756 day(s) ago

Hi everyone,

Once again thank you so much for your generous donations. Because of you, Oxfam has helped over 250,000 victims of Typhoon Haiyan receive food, water, and hygiene kits in the Philippines.

It's been just over a month since the typhoon struck the Central Philippines. I wanted to give you a quick update on how your money is helping the survivors recover.

This week Oxfam is distributing 400 tons of rice seeds to farmers who will need to plant or re-plant their crops to make next year's harvest. This rice seed is more climate-hardy and needs less pesticide and fertilizer to grow. Here are some photos of the distribution:

Oxfam has also started a cash-for-work program to pay local residents to clear rice fields of debris. This not only speeds up the planting process, it helps inject cash into the local economy. This can be preferable to direct food aid because it helps local markets reopen.

In addition to long-term aide, Oxfam continues to deliver emergency aide, build latrines and water tanks, and clear sludge and debris.

A month later, an estimated 4 million typhoon survivors are still homeless. An estimated 3 million survivors will need long-term food assistance. Please know that your help is still needed, and that your donation is doing a lot of good. Oxfam and I are so grateful for your generosity.

Happy holidays!

Happy Thanksgiving! We made it to $5,000!

Update #3  •   Posted 3773 day(s) ago

Hi everyone,

I hope you're having a great Thanksgiving. Just a quick update: as of today we've raised $5,285!

Two weeks ago I set a goal of raising just $1,000 for the Philippines. I never thought I'd raise five times that amount by my goal date. I'm so, so grateful to all of you for your generous donations and for your help spreading the word about what's happening in the Philippines. Tomorrow I'll give you a more in-depth update on how your gifts are helping typhoon victims. Today I just want to let you know how thankful Oxfam and I are for your generosity.

Happy Thanksgiving!
Jessica

PS -- I'm still accepting donations! Why not take a moment today and (gently!) challenge a sibling or cousin to match your donation? Or just let them know about Oxfam and what you're doing to help.

We reached $2,000! Here's how your gift is helping in the Philippines.

Update #2  •   Posted 3782 day(s) ago

Hi everyone,

Thank you for your awesome donations to Oxfam! I'm so grateful for your generosity and for your help spreading the word about what's going on in the Philippines. Because of you all, I was able to surpass my stretch goal of raising $2,000. Here's another some more information about how your donations are helping the victims of Typhoon Haiyan.

Oxfam distributed 10,000 sanitation/hygiene kits to Filipinos last week. These kits contained soap, towels, and toothpaste powder, along with detergent for washing clothing and dishes. The packages also included blankets, sleeping mats, and mosquito nets to provide shelter for victims who have lost their homes.

Here are some photos of Oxfam distributing water and the kits over the weekend. You can see some of the challenges of distributing fresh water to a country made up of 7,000 islands:

While it's difficult to bring aid to towns instead of meeting victims at distribution centers, Oxfam is committed to making sure women, the elderly, and the disabled have access to their resources. This week they are installing community latrines in Samar, Leyte, and Cebu.

Oxfam says their assessment team is still coming across villages that have had no help or outside contact since the typhoon. Please know that your donations are helping people that the government and other countries haven't yet reached.

Thanks again for your gifts to Oxfam. I'm still planning to raise donations through Thanksgiving, so please tell your friends that their help is still urgently needed in the Philippines. I'd super appreciate it if you Facebooked or Tweeted my Oxfam drive.

Update #1  •   Posted 3786 day(s) ago

Hey everyone,

I just want to say thank you on behalf of Oxfam for your generous gifts. I set a goal of reaching $1,000 before Thanksgiving, and because of you all I reached it in about eight hours.

Oxfam is acting quickly to get supplies into the hardest hit areas of the Philippines. Right now they are helping 20,000 displaced Filipinos by getting clean water and sanitation to them. Here's a photo of supplies landing in Cebu:

Oxfam has so far distributed rice to 50,000 people. By Saturday their goal is to distribute sanitation kits to 10,000 people.

Right now they are using your gifts to provide water filtration and food. After those immediate needs are met, they'll use donations to clear debris and pay local Typhoon survivors to help.

Their team in the Philippines is updating at https://twitter.com/oxfamph if you'd like to keep up with their progress.

Again, I'm so grateful for your support. Since there is still a bit of time before Thanksgiving, I set a new stretch goal of $2,000. So if you can, please let your friends know!

Okay, one more: Thank you!

Jessica
