To kickoff 2014 right and try something a bit different, I'm making a resolution to run a 4K for every $14 you donate here to Oxfam. My goal is to run one 4K every week and, in the process, raise a total of $728 to help support families around the world as they work to lift themselves out of poverty. Will you help me do it?

Why 4K?

  1. 4K sounds cooler than 2.48548 miles, don't you think?
  2. It's one K less than a 5K. I'm pretty much a newbie runner. Aside from one 5 kilometer zombie-infested obstacle course, I've never run a proper race. But I enjoy running on my own and find it not only phsycially invigorating, but mentally refreshing.
  3. Makes for a good twitter hashtag. #4K4Oxfam
  4. Also, four is my favorite number. So there's that.

Why Oxfam?

For the same reason that I work at Oxfam every day: I am passionately committed to our mission to right the wrongs of poverty, hunger, and injustice. The idea that one in three of us lives in poverty, even while there is so much wealth on this planet we share, is staggering. I go into work every day with the intention of helping fight this injustice. But until we totally eliminate poverty and injustice in all it's forms, there will always be more work to be done. While there are inevitably limits to how much we can each individually contribute, I find hope in the fact that our collective response as a global community has no such limits.

How do I know you're really running each week?

Crowd-sourced motivation. I could never deal with the crushing guilt that would come from missing a week when you've already sponsored me with your donation! I'll give a shout out to my sponsor each week after I run a 4K so you can follow along.

Do treadmills count?

I live in New England, where the temperature is currently in the teens and there is frozen stuff covering the ground, so yes running 4 kilometers on a treadmill counts! But I've got a great outdoor 4K route planned for the nice weather too. Also, ellipticals, bikes, etc. do not count, obviously.

Alright, how do I sponsor a 4K?
Make a donation by clicking the donate button above and entering $14 to sponsor a 4K. The process is fast, easy, and secure. You can use your credit card or paypal account to make a donation. There's also a comment field where you can leave me your Twitter handle or Facebook profile after making a donation so I can give you a shout out after I run the 4K you've sponsored. Each donation that comes in will sponsor the next week, until I have one donation for all 52 weeks of the year.

Can I sponsor more than one week or simply make donation in excess $14?

Of course! Your donation will quite literally help change lives. In my role as web editor at Oxfam America, I help share these incredible stories every day. Please donate as much as you are comfortable with. If you donate in an interval of $14, I'll assume you'd like to sponsor multiple 4K runs, which is awesome. If you round your $14 up to some other amount, that's awesome too! I'll consider it some extra encouragement to up my game that week too.
